Why Are My Teeth So Sensitive?

Why Are My Teeth So Sensitive?

If you frequently experience issues with tooth sensitivity, it can put a damper on your day. You may find yourself avoiding your favorite hot and cold foods, which can be a disappointment if you love a nice bowl of ice cream or a steaming cup of hot coffee in the morning. It’s not unusual to experience tooth sensitivity from time to time. The problem arises when you have frequent tooth sensitivity and it is affecting your quality of life. If you are uncomfortable every time you brush your teeth or are changing the foods you eat and drink, it is time for a visit to check the state of your oral health.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth?

When the outer layer of your tooth, the enamel, becomes damaged or compromised, it can lead to issues with tooth sensitivity. The only time tooth sensitivity is expected is following certain dental treatments, such as a filling, a dental crown, or a root canal. Patients are notified of this side effect after treatment and therefore should not be alarmed when they have discomfort. The discomfort and sensitivity will dissipate over time. If you have not had a recent dental treatment and are experiencing tooth sensitivity, it could be caused by:

  • Brushing your teeth too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush

  • Receding gums

  • Tooth decay

  • Gum disease

  • Cracked or chipped teeth

  • Grinding your teeth

  • Excessive teeth whitening

Ways to Help Tooth Sensitivity

Dental intervention is the best way to determine if there is a problem with your tooth enamel or your oral health. While waiting for your appointment, you can make sure you are using a soft-bristled toothbrush and switch to a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. You should also use gentle motions when brushing and avoid vigorous strokes, as improper brushing techniques can damage tooth enamel.
