Keep Your Teeth Healthy This Halloween

Halloween is one of the most popular holidays in America. People love dressing in costume and taking on another persona. This is also a favorite holiday of those who love candy and sweets. Americans spend over $2 billion on candy each Halloween. Enjoying sweets in moderation is perfectly acceptable, but some people can easily overindulge and create dental health problems for themselves. We want to share some helpful tips to ensure your teeth don’t experience a fright this Halloween.

Halloween Health Tips

Here are some tips to help avoid any dental problems or emergencies this Halloween:

Brush Your Teeth Thoroughly

Patients should be brushing their teeth a minimum of two minutes twice a day. Most cavities form when sugary or sticky candy is left on the teeth for too long and the enamel wears away, leaving decay to creep in. Brushing thoroughly can help prevent this problem. We would love for patients to brush after each meal.

Don’t Forget to Floss

Flossing daily is a great way to remove lingering food and bacteria from between your teeth. Not only does it help with decay, but it also helps prevent bad breath.

Drink Plenty of Water

It may not always be possible to brush your teeth after eating sweets. It is wise to drink plenty of water to help clear out remaining bacteria and sugar remaining on and between your teeth.

Remove the Temptation

If you love sugar and can’t stop yourself from overindulging on candy and sweets, it is best not to keep them in your house. There are a number of other options you can give out for Halloween, such as glow sticks, Play-Doh, pencils, and mini toys.

If you have not had a hygiene examination and cleaning within the past six months, we recommend scheduling an appointment. Your oral health is important and routine care is necessary to ensure there are no concerns that can lead to a dental emergency.
