Tooth Enamel: Damage And Erosion

Tooth Enamel: Damage And Erosion

Do you regularly experience tooth sensitivity issues or experience discomfort in your teeth? If so, there is a chance your tooth enamel is compromised or damaged. Tooth enamel is the outer covering that protects the inside of the tooth. While it is the strongest substance in your body, it is not indestructible. Our teeth get a workout each time we eat, and while our teeth are designed to last a lifetime, it is not always the case, especially when they are not cared for properly. There are many reasons your tooth enamel can become damaged:

Poor Oral Hygiene

One of the best ways you can care for your teeth is to clean them properly each day. Professional dental care is only received a few times a year, and the rest falls on your shoulders. If you are not brushing and flossing correctly or for the recommended amount of time, you are leaving bacteria on and between your teeth, which will eventually turn into decay. Tooth enamel can also become damaged when you brush too harshly. Using the correct tools such as an electric toothbrush, like an Oral B Braun, can help get into the nooks and crannies of the teeth.

Grinding and Clenching Teeth

There are a large number of adults who grind and clench their teeth during sleep or times of high stress. Not only can this lead to issues such as TMD, but it can cause the tooth enamel to become unevenly worn and even lead to teeth that crack and break. Treatments such as a removable appliance can be helpful.

Highly Acidic Foods

For years you have learned about the impact that sugar can have on your teeth and how foods high in sugar can cause damage to the tooth enamel. The same is also true for highly acidic foods and beverages. When consumed too often, foods such as carbonated drinks, citrus, berries, and apples can cause damage to your teeth.

One of the best ways to help your tooth enamel is to maintain routine hygiene examinations. During these visits, your teeth are inspected for any signs of damage or wear. Appropriate treatments can be recommended before a dental emergency occurs.
