Getting to the “Root” of Your Oral Health Problems

Have you been experiencing severe dental discomfort that has been lingering for days or weeks? Or were you recommended for dental treatment during your last visit to the dentist and you have postponed treatment for months or even years? If either of these sound like your situation, you may be in need of a root canal.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

A tooth has different components: the outer covering, known as the enamel, and the inside of the tooth, known as the dental pulp. When decay is present in the enamel and is not treated in a timely fashion, it continues to make its way through the tooth until it reaches the pulp. When the pulp becomes infected and inflamed is when we would recommend a root canal. The process of a root canal involves removing any decay on the outside of the tooth and making a way to the inside of the tooth, removing the infected pulp, cleaning and sterilizing the area, filling in the space and sealing it. Many patients who receive a root canal will also need a tooth replacement option, such as a dental crown, to complete treatment.

Why Do We Recommend a Root Canal?

Over the years, root canals have gotten a poor reputation. Thanks to techniques used today, along with the advancements in dental technology, the process itself is similar to getting a large filling. A root canal is a beneficial treatment method because it saves your natural tooth. It is the final treatment option before an extraction is needed.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Regular hygiene examinations are a great way to detect decay when in the early stages; however, not every adult visits the dentist regularly. If you experience any of these warning signs, it is best to schedule an appointment as soon as possible:

  • Persistent tooth and gum pain

  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold

  • Swollen gums

  • Discomfort when the tooth is touched

  • A chipped or cracked tooth

Delaying dental care and avoiding treatment when you are experiencing discomfort will only lead to serious oral health complications. For more information, you can contact Dr. Michael Krochak at:
