Good bye Gummy Smile

Good bye Gummy Smile

Do you dislike your smile? You’d be surprised how many people do. Even people
with healthy, straight, brilliantly white teeth often cover their mouth with their hand, try to remember to smile with their lips closed or even stop smiling altogether.

A common cosmetic issue that many people don’t realize can be corrected is having a gummy smile. This is a condition in which too much gum shows when you smile, making your teeth look too small, even though they’re a perfectly normal size. Sometimes this affects all the front teeth, sometimes if affects only 1-2 teeth. In either case their smiles end up being less attractive than they should be.

There are a number of reasons for gummy smiles but one of the most common goes back to the time when your adult teeth were erupting through the gum. Sometimes your bite and jaw relationship cause the teeth to hit the opposing teeth before they fully erupt so the gum is actually still covering up part of your teeth.

We have a number to ways of correcting this problem. Called “gum lifts” or “crown lengthening”, these techniques let us uncover underlying teeth, smooth out your gum line, and create a much more attractive smile. Depending on your individual circumstances (each case is
different) we may be able to complete the treatment without conventional surgery, using a laser.
The procedure can often be completed in a single office visit, discomfort is minimal, and recovery is remarkably quick. Sometimes, a minor surgical procedure is needed to reshape the bone and gum surrounding the teeth.

If you like the idea of finally ending the embarrassment and enjoying the smile you deserve, just give us a call. We’ll be happy to show you how easy it is to say “Good-bye gummy smile.”
