WHAT DENTISTS ARE DOING TO IMPROVE SERVICES FOR OLDER ADULTS

As people are living longer and enjoying good health for many years, dentists are increasingly offering improved services to recognize the special needs of older adults. This growing segment of the population is wearing fewer dentures and they are keeping their natural teeth longer.  They are also concerned to maintain good health and a great smile for many years.  The use of dental implants to avoid the need for removable dentures or partial dentures is a tremendous increase in the quality of life for many senior citizens.

Patients in this group sometimes require special consideration because reduced mobility and dexterity may make daily oral hygiene difficult.  More frequent dental cleanings can help combat this issue.  Older patients also often have drier mouths, which is natural as we age but exacerbated by many medications. A drier mouth puts their teeth at greater risk for decay. This is because saliva not only helps wash away debris but has enzymes and buffers to neutralize acids in your mouth that cause decay. In addition, older patients have gum recession exposing the roots of their teeth which are 700% softer than enamel therefore very decay prone. The use of professional preventive fluorides in the office can help protect these patients as well as special mouth rinses.

We are increasingly sensitive to the special needs of and the importance of dental health in the older patient.  We have neck and back pillows in our office so lying in the dental chair can be more comfortable.  As many older patients are more health conscious than ever before, regular visits to the dentist ensure their oral health is an important part of their overall health.  Unlike many dentists, we do not prejudge our senior patients and decide to extract teeth versus saving them due to the age of our patient. The ability to eat comfortably and smile adds tremendously to the quality of one’s life as we age.
